How do you know what happens in american idol?

ok is american idol really on live? how does everyone know who get's voted off? for instance, brooke white is voted off tomight 4/30/08 and most people say that she cried like crazy and that ryan said this a nd paula said that. i don't get it? someone plz explain it to me? Thanx!!
