How is the composition of meteorites related to the formation and evolution of asteroids?

It is believed that most meteorites found on Earth are actually pieces of asteroids that have been chipped off in collisions. In a few cases there is even evidence of which asteroid they might have come from. Chemical studies of these meteorites provides information on the age, composition, and development of their parent bodies.
