ask him yes/no questions. Can he blink 1x for no, 2 x for yes? then ask him if he'd rather you left the room while the nurses are tending to him. I think you should keep visiting him - read to him if he would enjoy that - ask him. Develop some kind of communication so you can interact even a little. It would give him a little more say in whats going on for him. He could tell you if he's cold or hot, window blinds open or closed, etc. you could do little things to help him feel more comfy.
