“The main goal of meditation is to learn more about yourself” Discuss?

In Theravada, the goal is to tranquillise and focus the mind (Samadhi) in order to watch how it behaves. So this is partly about finding out about yourself, and partly about creating enough ease and confidence to continue with the path. Thereafter, Vipana meditation is experiencing oneself in accordance with the three signs (Anatta, Anicca, and Dukkha).
